The Big Question

Is Augusta Precious Metals legit?

Yes. Here’s the evidence we’d want to see from any Gold IRA company, and what Augusta shows:

  • A long, checkable record. In business since 2012, with BBB accreditation and an A+ rating since 2015. You can read its complaint history yourself on the BBB profile.
  • Proper storage. IRA metals go to an IRS-approved depository. Augusta recommends Delaware Depository and says metals are held fully allocated, never in a company warehouse or at your home.
  • Candid buyback language. Augusta states plainly that the law prevents it from guaranteeing a buyback. Companies that promise a guaranteed price are the ones to worry about.
  • Industry recognition. Augusta says it was named Best Overall Gold IRA Company by Money and Most Transparent Gold IRA Company by Investopedia for 2022 through 2026, and reports more than 4,000 five-star ratings across review sites.

Legit isn’t the same as right for you. The real questions with Augusta are fit: whether you meet the $50,000 minimum, and whether you’re comfortable with the spread on the coins you are offered.

The Process

How opening an Augusta Gold IRA works

For the full walkthrough, including what to have ready, which accounts qualify and the rollover mistakes to avoid, see how to open an Augusta Precious Metals gold IRA.

  1. Request the free guide or call. You start by requesting Augusta’s guide or scheduling a call. Nothing is purchased at this stage.
  2. Education before any purchase. Augusta offers a free web conference led by its Director of Education, Devlyn Steele, covering how metals fit in a retirement plan, inflation, Federal Reserve policy, and what to ask any Gold IRA company. Augusta says you also speak one-on-one with a salaried, non-commissioned educator.
  3. Open a self-directed IRA and move the money. Augusta helps with the paperwork to open an account with a custodian and roll over funds from an existing IRA or 401(k). Ask for a direct transfer so the money never passes through your hands; our Gold IRA rollover guide explains why. How long this takes depends largely on how fast your current provider releases the funds.
  4. Choose gold or silver. The $50,000 minimum can be met with any combination of products. Ask for the price over spot on each one.
  5. Metal ships to the depository. Augusta covers shipping and insurance on qualifying orders until the metal arrives. After that, Augusta says a dedicated customer success agent supports your account for its lifetime.
Costs

Augusta Precious Metals fees

Augusta doesn’t charge a management fee on the self-directed IRA, because you direct the account yourself. You’re responsible for two outside fees: the custodian’s account setup fee and the depository’s storage fee. Augusta now lists both in its FAQ: $50 to set up, then $125 a year to the custodian (Equity Trust) and $110 a year for storage and insurance. It also says every account gets up to 10 years of those yearly fees paid by Augusta.

For the full breakdown, including a 10-year cost comparison with Birch Gold and Goldco and what the spread costs at $50,000, see our Augusta Precious Metals fees and minimum guide.

If the $50,000 minimum or the gold-and-silver-only range rules Augusta out for you, our Augusta Precious Metals alternatives guide compares four other companies on minimum, fees and metals.

The cost most people miss: the dealer spread, the gap between what you pay for a coin or bar and the metal’s spot price. It isn’t in any fee table, and it can matter more than the yearly fees. Ask for it on every product before you buy, at Augusta or anywhere else.

Complaints

Augusta complaints and friction points

No company this size has zero complaints, so the useful question is what kind. You can read every complaint and Augusta’s response on its BBB profile. For the full record, including lawsuits and regulator searches, see our Augusta Precious Metals complaints page. Based on how Augusta’s model works, these are the friction points we’d expect people to run into, and how to avoid them:

  • The $50,000 minimum. People who find out late that they don’t qualify. Check your amount before you call.
  • The spread is not published. Augusta lists its account fees, but not its spread as a percentage. Ask for the price of each coin and the spot price in writing.
  • Buyback expectations. A buyback is not a guaranteed price. Ask how the buyback price is calculated before you buy, not when you’re ready to sell.
  • Metal prices move. Gold and silver can fall after you buy. That’s market risk, not a company problem, but it’s a common source of disappointment with any dealer.
When You Sell

Augusta’s buyback policy

In its own words, Augusta says: “Although Augusta has historically bought back our customers’ gold and silver (at the time of this writing we have never declined a buyback), the law prohibits us from guaranteeing we will repurchase the products we sell. Augusta’s buyback policy is subject to change without notice.”

That’s the honest version of what every dealer’s buyback really is: a strong track record, not a promise. Before you buy, ask how the buyback price is set relative to spot and whether any fee applies, and get the answer in writing.

For the step-by-step process, how the price is set and how long payment takes, see our Augusta Precious Metals buyback guide.

Questions People Ask

Augusta Precious Metals review: FAQ

Is Augusta Precious Metals legit?

Yes. Augusta Precious Metals has been in business since 2012, has held BBB accreditation with an A+ rating since 2015, and holds IRA metals at IRS-approved depositories. Being legitimate is not the same as being right for everyone, though: its $50,000 minimum and the spread on the metal are the main things to weigh.

What is Augusta Precious Metals’ minimum investment?

Augusta has a $50,000 minimum for both IRA and cash purchases, and the minimum can be met with any combination of products. That is higher than Birch Gold Group (about $5,000), American Hartford Gold ($10,000 for an IRA), and Goldco ($25,000).

What fees does Augusta Precious Metals charge?

Augusta does not charge a management fee on the self-directed IRA. You pay the custodian’s account setup fee and the depository’s storage fee: $50 to set up, then $125 a year to the custodian and $110 a year for storage, and Augusta says it pays those yearly fees for up to 10 years on every account. Augusta covers shipping and insurance on qualifying orders until the metal reaches the depository. Ask for all fees in writing before you fund the account.

Does Augusta have a buyback program?

Augusta says it has historically bought back its customers’ gold and silver and, at the time of writing, had never declined a buyback. It also states that the law prohibits it from guaranteeing it will repurchase the products it sells, and that its buyback policy can change without notice.

Where does Augusta store IRA metals?

Augusta recommends Delaware Depository and says customer metals are stored fully allocated and off the depository’s balance sheet. As with any Gold IRA, the metal must be held at an IRS-approved depository, not at home.

What metals does Augusta sell?

Augusta focuses on gold and silver, both for Gold and Silver IRAs and for cash purchases delivered outside an IRA.

Are Augusta’s representatives paid on commission?

Augusta says customers speak one-on-one with a salaried, non-commissioned educator. That structure is meant to remove the incentive to rush a sale, but it is still a sales process, so take your time and get every number in writing.

What is the Augusta web conference?

It is a free web conference led by Augusta’s Director of Education, Devlyn Steele. According to Augusta, it covers how precious metals fit into a diversified retirement strategy, how gold and silver have been used to hedge inflation, how Federal Reserve policy affects savings, and what to ask any Gold IRA company before buying.

Is Augusta Precious Metals right for a first-time investor?

It can be, if you are moving $50,000 or more and want to understand fees, storage, and IRS rules before you buy. If you are starting with less than $50,000, Augusta cannot open your account, and a lower-minimum company is the practical choice.

What are the best alternatives to Augusta Precious Metals?

For smaller accounts, Birch Gold Group starts at about $5,000 with a fully published fee list, and American Hartford Gold starts at $10,000 for an IRA with a stated no-fee buyback. Goldco starts at $25,000 and has held BBB accreditation since 2011.
