Best Gold IRA companies compared: minimums, fees, and BBB records
All four companies below hold an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, so the letter grade alone won’t separate them. The real differences are in minimums, how openly fees are published, and what happens when you want to sell.
| Company | In business since | Minimum | BBB | Published fees | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Augusta Precious Metals Our top pick |
2012 | $50,000 | A+ (accredited 2015) | No IRA management fee; $50 setup and $235/yr custodian and storage, paid by Augusta for up to 10 years | $50,000+ rollovers who want answers before buying |
| Birch Gold Group | 2011 (per BBB) | $5,000 | A+ (accredited 2013) | $50 setup, $30 wire, about $235/yr; first year covered on accounts over $50,000 | Smaller first accounts |
| Goldco | 2006 | $25,000 | A+ (accredited 2011) | About $50 setup, $80-125/yr admin, $100-150/yr storage | Mid-size rollovers wanting a long track record |
| American Hartford Gold | 2015 | $10,000 IRA ($5,000 cash) | A+ (accredited 2016) | About $180-280/yr | Buyers who care most about the exit |
Where these numbers come from: minimums and fees for Augusta and Birch Gold are from each company’s own FAQ and Gold IRA pages; Goldco and American Hartford Gold fee ranges are from company materials and independent reviews; founding and accreditation dates are from each company’s BBB profile, including Augusta’s BBB profile and Birch Gold’s BBB profile. Checked September 2026. Fees are set by custodians and depositories and can change, so always ask for a written fee schedule.
Which Gold IRA company fits the amount you’re moving?
The fastest way to narrow the list is your starting amount. A company can’t open your account if you’re under its minimum, so start here.
None of the four companies here will open an account at this level, and yearly fees of roughly $200 or more would eat into a small balance. Many people wait until they can move more.
Birch Gold Group ($5,000 minimum) or American Hartford Gold ($10,000 IRA minimum). Birch publishes every fee up front, which makes it easy to budget.
Goldco joins the list, along with Birch Gold and American Hartford Gold. Compare written fee schedules and buyback terms side by side.
All four are open to you. Augusta Precious Metals is our top pick here: a dedicated contact, an economist-led session before you buy, and no management fee on the IRA.
Why Augusta Precious Metals is our top pick for $50,000+
Augusta Precious Metals
Best for a clear, no-pressure explanation before you commit
No cost. No obligation to buy.
Augusta has been in business since 2012 and has held BBB accreditation with an A+ rating since 2015. What sets it apart is the order of operations: before you fund anything, you get a one-on-one web conference with its economist team and a dedicated contact who stays with your account. The company doesn’t charge a management fee on the self-directed IRA; you pay the custodian’s setup fee and the depository’s storage fee, and Augusta covers shipping and insurance on qualifying orders until the metal reaches the depository. Augusta lists $235 a year in custodian and storage fees and says it pays them for up to 10 years on every account; see our Augusta fees and minimum guide for the math.
What we like
- Education session before you open or fund anything
- One dedicated contact instead of a rotating sales team
- No management fee on the IRA itself
- A+ with the BBB, accredited since 2015
Worth knowing first
- $50,000 minimum rules it out for smaller accounts
- The spread per coin is not published, so ask for prices in writing
- Onboarding includes a scheduled call, not an instant online signup

Birch Gold Group, Goldco, and American Hartford Gold
We don’t earn anything from these three companies. Each is a legitimate option, and each beats Augusta on at least one point.
Birch Gold Group
Birch Gold has the lowest starting point of the four at $5,000, and it publishes the clearest fee list we found: a $50 setup fee, a $30 wire fee, $110 a year for storage and insurance, and a $125 yearly management fee. On new accounts over $50,000, Birch covers the first year’s fees.
Where it beats Augusta: lower minimum and fees posted in full online. Best for: first-time buyers starting under $50,000. Full details in our Birch Gold Group review.
Goldco
Goldco has the longest history of the group and has held its BBB accreditation since 2011. Its minimum sits in the middle at $25,000. Reported costs run about $50 to set up, $80 to $125 a year for account administration, and $100 to $150 a year for storage, depending on the custodian and depository.
Read our full Goldco review: fees, minimum, buyback terms and complaint record.
Where it beats Augusta: half the minimum and a longer operating history. Best for: mid-size rollovers.
American Hartford Gold
American Hartford Gold is the youngest company here but has a $10,000 IRA minimum ($5,000 for a cash purchase) and states in writing that it will buy back metals it sold you with no liquidation fee. Yearly costs typically land between $180 and $280.
Where it beats Augusta: lower minimum and an explicit no-fee buyback commitment. Best for: buyers who weigh the exit as heavily as the entry.

Augusta vs. Birch Gold Group
Our take: If you’re moving $50,000 or more and want to understand everything before you buy, Augusta is the stronger fit. If you’re starting smaller, Birch Gold is the better choice: its $5,000 minimum and fully published fee list make it easier to get started.
Augusta vs. Goldco
Our take: Goldco has the longer track record and half the minimum, which makes it a solid choice between $25,000 and $50,000. Above $50,000, Augusta’s education-first onboarding and no IRA management fee give it the edge for us.
Augusta vs. American Hartford Gold
Our take: American Hartford Gold wins on entry point and on its written no-fee buyback commitment. Augusta wins on process: a dedicated contact and an economist-led session before you buy. If you’re moving $50,000 or more and want to learn first, we’d start with Augusta.
What a Gold IRA really costs
Gold IRA fees come from three places: the custodian who administers the account, the depository that stores the metal, and the dealer who sells it. Here’s what to ask about.
One-time setup fee
Charged by the custodian to open the self-directed IRA. Birch Gold lists $50; Goldco is reported around $50.
Yearly custodian or management fee
Covers account administration and IRS reporting. Birch Gold lists $125 a year. Augusta charges no management fee of its own.
Yearly storage and insurance
Paid to the IRS-approved depository that holds your metal. Birch Gold lists $110 a year; Goldco is reported at $100 to $150.
The dealer spread
The difference between what you pay for the metal and its spot price. It’s often the biggest cost and the least discussed, so ask for it on every product.

How a Gold IRA rollover works
Most people fund a Gold IRA by moving money from an existing IRA or an old 401(k). Done correctly, the move isn’t taxed.
- Open a self-directed IRA. The Gold IRA company connects you with a custodian that’s allowed to hold physical metals.
- Move the money directly. Ask for a direct rollover or trustee-to-trustee transfer so the money never passes through your hands. If an employer plan pays you directly, it must withhold 20% for taxes, and you have 60 days to deposit the full amount. You’re also limited to one 60-day IRA-to-IRA rollover in any 12-month period. Details are on the IRS rollover page.
- Choose your metals. Only IRS-eligible bullion and coins can go into the account. Ask for the price over spot on each product.
- Metals ship to the depository. Your metal is held at an IRS-approved depository in your IRA’s name, never at home. IRC Section 408(m) requires that bullion in an IRA be held by a qualified trustee.

Four questions to ask any Gold IRA company
What’s the all-in fee, in writing?
Setup, yearly custodian, storage, and the spread on each product, before you fund anything.
Which depository, by name?
You should get a specific, named, insured facility, not “a secure location.”
What happens when I want to sell?
Ask how the buyback price is set relative to spot, and whether there’s a liquidation fee.
Standard bullion or “rare” coins?
Collectible coins usually carry much higher markups. Be cautious of anyone pushing them hard.
Red flags that should end the call: pressure to “act today,” any suggestion to keep IRA metals at home, and fees that won’t be put in writing. You can report suspected precious metals fraud to the CFTC.
How we chose the best Gold IRA companies
We started with companies that specialize in Gold IRAs and hold an A+ BBB rating, then compared them on four things that change what you actually pay and experience: the minimum investment, how openly fees are published, how long the company has held its BBB accreditation, and the buyback terms. Figures come from each company’s own published terms and BBB profiles, checked in September 2026. This comparison is based on published information; we did not open accounts at every company.

Best Gold IRA companies: frequently asked questions
What are the best Gold IRA companies in 2026?
Based on minimums, published fees, and BBB records, four established options are Augusta Precious Metals (our pick for people moving $50,000 or more), Birch Gold Group (lowest minimum at $5,000), Goldco (longest BBB accreditation, since 2011), and American Hartford Gold (written no-fee buyback commitment). The best one for you depends mostly on how much you plan to move.
Which Gold IRA company has the lowest minimum?
Of the four companies compared here, Birch Gold Group has the lowest published starting point at $5,000. American Hartford Gold starts at $10,000 for an IRA, Goldco at $25,000, and Augusta Precious Metals at $50,000.
How much does a Gold IRA cost per year?
Most Gold IRAs carry a one-time setup fee plus yearly custodian and storage fees. Birch Gold Group publishes about $235 a year ($110 storage and insurance plus a $125 management fee), and independent reviews put Goldco and American Hartford Gold in a similar $180 to $280 range. Augusta does not charge a management fee on the IRA. It lists $235 a year in custodian and storage fees and says it pays them for up to 10 years on every account, so ask how many years you get, in writing.
Is Augusta Precious Metals worth the $50,000 minimum?
If you are moving $50,000 or more and want a slow, education-first process with a dedicated contact, Augusta is a strong fit and it is our top pick for that group. If you are moving less than $50,000, Augusta will not be able to open your account, and a company with a lower minimum such as Birch Gold Group or American Hartford Gold makes more sense.
Can I roll over my 401(k) into a Gold IRA without a penalty?
Usually yes, if it is done as a direct rollover or trustee-to-trustee transfer. In a direct rollover the money moves between institutions without passing through your hands, which avoids the mandatory 20% withholding that applies when an employer plan pays you directly. Whether you can roll over a 401(k) while still employed depends on your plan’s rules, so check with your plan administrator first.
Can I store Gold IRA metals at home?
No. Under Internal Revenue Code Section 408(m), IRA-owned bullion must be held by a qualified trustee or custodian, which in practice means an IRS-approved depository. Keeping IRA metals at home can be treated as a distribution, which can mean taxes and penalties.
Do Gold IRA companies buy back your metals?
Most established companies offer to buy metals back, but terms vary and none can guarantee a price. American Hartford Gold states it will buy back metals it sold with no liquidation fee. Always ask how the buyback price is calculated relative to the spot price before you buy.
Is a Gold IRA a good idea for retirement?
A Gold IRA can be one way to diversify part of a retirement portfolio, but physical metals pay no interest or dividends, their price can fall, and yearly storage fees reduce returns. Many people keep precious metals to a limited share of their savings. A licensed financial advisor can help you decide what fits your situation.
How do I check if a Gold IRA company is legitimate?
Look up the company’s Better Business Bureau profile and read the complaints and how they were answered, get every fee in writing before you fund the account, confirm the depository by name, and be cautious of anyone pushing urgency, home storage, or high-markup collectible coins. The CFTC also takes precious metals fraud complaints.
