Birch Gold Group Review 2026: Fees, Minimum and Complaints
Our Birch Gold Group review, short version: Birch Gold is a legitimate dealer with the lowest entry point of the big gold IRA companies ($5,000, by its own site), fees it actually publishes (about $235 a year) and all four IRA metals. The catch is that a flat $235 a year is heavy on a small account, and the price you pay for the metal is not published. The numbers below show where Birch Gold makes sense and where it does not.

Birch Gold Group fees, line by line
Birch Gold is one of the few companies that lists its account fees on its own site. They are flat dollar amounts, not a percentage of your balance.
| Fee | Birch Gold (published) | When |
|---|---|---|
| Account setup | $50 | Once |
| Wire transfer | $30 | Once |
| Storage and insurance | $110 | Yearly |
| Account management | $125 | Yearly |
| Price of the metal (premium over spot) | Not published | Every purchase |
So year one costs $315 ($80 one-time plus $235), and each year after that costs about $235. On a transfer over $50,000, Birch Gold says it pays your first year of fees. Its pages do not say whether that covers the $50 setup and $30 wire or only the $235 of yearly fees, so ask.

What $235 a year really costs at your balance
A low minimum sounds friendly, but flat fees hit small accounts hardest. Here is the same $235 a year as a share of different balances, and over 10 years if Birch Gold's fees stay where they are today. These are our calculations from Birch Gold's published fees, before any change in the price of the metal.
| Account size | Yearly fees as % of balance | Fees over 10 years | 10-year fees as % of what you put in |
|---|---|---|---|
| $5,000 | 4.7% | $2,430 | 48.6% |
| $10,000 | 2.35% | $2,430 | 24.3% |
| $25,000 | 0.94% | $2,430 | 9.7% |
| $50,000+ | 0.47% | $2,195 (first year covered) | 4.4% |
| $100,000+ | 0.24% | $2,195 (first year covered) | 2.2% |
How we got these numbers: $80 one-time plus $235 a year for 10 years is $2,430. For transfers over $50,000 we took off one year of yearly fees ($235) and assumed you still pay the $80 one-time charges, which gives $2,195.
What it means: on a $5,000 gold IRA, gold has to rise about 4.7% a year just to cover the account fees, before the dealer's markup. That is true at any company with flat fees, not only Birch Gold. If you only have $5,000 to $10,000 for metals, ask yourself whether an IRA is the right wrapper at all.
Birch Gold's markup and buyback: what it says, and what to ask
Birch Gold is open that it charges “a premium over the spot price” of the metal, like any retailer, and that dealer fees “vary from customer to customer.” It also says that, unlike many dealers, it does not make money when it buys metal back. That is a useful promise, but it does not tell you what you are paying on the way in.
- What is the price of each coin or bar, and what is the spot price right now? Please send both in writing.
- Are these products bullion or proof and numismatic coins? Why this product and not a lower-premium bar?
- Does the first-year fee waiver include the $50 setup and $30 wire?
- If I sell back to you, how is the buyback price calculated?
- Which custodian and which depository, by name, and are storage fees for segregated or commingled storage?

How opening a Birch Gold IRA works
Birch Gold describes three steps. We have added what to check at each one.
- Fund the accountA Birch Gold specialist helps move money from your current IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or TSP into a self-directed IRA with the custodian. Ask for a direct transfer so nothing is withheld for tax. Our guides cover the 401(k) and IRA rollover, the TSP and 403(b) and 457(b) rules.
- Choose your metalsPick IRS-eligible products. Birch Gold lists the purity rules: gold 99.5%, silver 99.9%, platinum and palladium 99.95%. Get the per-item price and spot price in writing before you approve.
- Store them at an approved depositoryThe metal goes to a depository such as Delaware Depository or Brink's, not to your home. Ask whether the $110 storage fee is for segregated or commingled storage.

Birch Gold complaints and lawsuit claims: what holds up
Ratings: Birch Gold holds an A+ BBB rating and a AAA rating from the Business Consumer Alliance. Check the live BBB profile (linked below) for current complaint counts and whether each was answered. Review sites that discuss Birch Gold complaints describe the usual themes in this industry: confusion between the spot price and the price paid, shipping delays and follow-up sales calls.
“Birch Gold lawsuit” articles: If you search for a Birch Gold lawsuit, you will find pages claiming an SEC settlement, a bankruptcy and investor fraud suits. None of the ones we read gives a court name or case number. Birch Gold has published a page calling those claims fabricated. Our rule: a lawsuit claim without a court and a case number is unverified, and you can check a real one yourself on PACER, the federal court records system.
The one case we could verify: In 2022, Walter Mitchell v. Birch Gold Group claimed that birchgold.com was not accessible enough to people with disabilities. That is a common type of website claim against many companies, and it has nothing to do with how customers' metals or accounts were handled. The public listing does not show the outcome.

Birch Gold Group review: frequently asked questions
Is Birch Gold Group legit?
Yes. Birch Gold Group has sold precious metals since 2011, holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and a AAA rating with the Business Consumer Alliance, and publishes its account fees. Like every dealer, it makes money on the price of the metal it sells you, so ask for that price in writing.
What is the Birch Gold Group minimum investment?
Birch Gold says it currently requires $5,000 to open a precious metals IRA and that the amount can change with market conditions. CNBC Select listed $10,000 in September 2026, so confirm the current figure when you call.
How much does Birch Gold Group charge per year?
Birch Gold publishes a $50 setup fee and a $30 wire fee once, then about $235 a year: $110 for storage and insurance and $125 for account management. On transfers over $50,000, Birch Gold says it pays the first year of fees.
Does Birch Gold Group buy back metals?
Yes. Birch Gold says it welcomes the chance to buy back metals it sold you and that it does not make money when it buys back. It does not publish a written buyback price formula, so ask how the price is set before you buy.
Has Birch Gold Group been sued?
We could verify one routine case: a 2022 website accessibility claim, Walter Mitchell v. Birch Gold Group. Articles claiming an SEC settlement, a bankruptcy or investor fraud suits give no case numbers, and Birch Gold calls them fabricated. Treat any lawsuit claim without a court and case number as unverified.
Is Birch Gold or Augusta better?
It depends on how much you are moving. Birch Gold accepts much smaller accounts and offers platinum and palladium. Augusta requires $50,000, sells only gold and silver, charges no management fee on the IRA itself and starts with a free education session. See our Augusta vs Birch Gold comparison.
