Augusta Precious Metals Buyback (2026): How Selling Back and Withdrawals Work
The Augusta Precious Metals buyback works like this: you call, Augusta quotes a price for your specific coins on a recorded line, you get 24 hours to compare it with other dealers, and the money typically reaches your IRA in about three weeks, with no separate liquidation fee. Most people ask how they get money out before they ever put money in, which is the right order. This page covers selling back, required minimum distributions and taking coins home, using Augusta's own terms and the IRS rules.

How selling back to Augusta works
- Call Augusta and say what you want to sell. All of it or part of it; Augusta says partial sales are fine.
- Get the price on a recorded call. The quote is for your specific coins and bars. That call starts a 24-hour window.
- Compare within 24 hours. Call one other dealer with the same list. If they bid more, Augusta says you can ask to cancel.
- The sale goes through Equity Trust and the depository. Your custodian approves the sale and the depository releases the metal.
- Cash lands in your IRA. Augusta says this typically takes about three weeks. Selling inside the IRA does not by itself create a tax bill; tax comes into it when you take money out of a traditional IRA.

What price will you get when you sell back?
No liquidation fee does not mean selling is free. Every dealer sells at one price and buys back at a lower one. That gap, the spread, is the true cost of a round trip, and it is the number most people never ask about.
A simple way to see your own spread: on the day you buy, ask Augusta two prices for the same coin, what you pay today and what Augusta would bid for it today. The difference, as a percentage of what you pay, is how far gold has to rise before you break even.
Hypothetical example: if you pay $50,000 and the same-day bid for those coins is $45,000, the gap is $5,000, or 10%. The metal would need to rise about 11% ($5,000 divided by $45,000) before a sale returns your $50,000. These numbers are for illustration only; ask for your own.
Bullion coins usually carry a smaller spread than specialty or proof coins. If getting out cheaply matters to you, say so before you buy, and ask what the bid would be on each product you are offered. Our Augusta fees and minimum guide covers the account fees side.
RMDs from an Augusta gold IRA
A traditional gold IRA has the same required minimum distribution rules as any other traditional IRA. The metal does not change them.
| Rule | What the IRS says | Gold IRA tip |
|---|---|---|
| Start age | 73 | Augusta also lists 73 |
| First RMD | By April 1 of the year after you turn 73 | Taking two in one year can push up your tax bill |
| Missed RMD | 25% excise tax on the shortfall; 10% if corrected within two years | Allow about three weeks for a sale to settle |
| Several IRAs | Each RMD is figured separately, but the total can come from one or more IRAs | Take it from a cash IRA and leave the metal alone |
| Roth IRA | No RMDs during the owner's lifetime | Roth gold has no forced sales while you are alive |
When an RMD is due, you have two choices with Augusta: sell part of the metal and send the cash out, or take coins out in kind through Equity Trust. The third choice, and often the simplest, is the one in the table: if you have another IRA with cash in it, take the whole RMD from there.

Can you take your coins home?
Not while they are inside the IRA. Augusta ships IRA metals only to approved depositories in the United States, and says home-storage arrangements can put the account's tax status at risk. If you see a company advertise a home-storage gold IRA, read our gold IRA scams and red flags guide first.
You can, however, take the coins out. Augusta says you can ask your custodian to ship metals to you or arrange to pick them up at the depository. Moving coins out of a traditional IRA is a distribution, so it counts as income in the year you take it. Ask Equity Trust how the coins will be valued for the tax form, and talk to a tax professional before you do it.

Buyback terms: Augusta vs other gold IRA companies
| Company | Stated buyback terms | Read more |
|---|---|---|
| Augusta Precious Metals | No separate liquidation fee; 24-hour window to compare; never declined a buyback (not guaranteed) | Augusta review |
| Goldco | Advertises a "highest buyback guarantee" with no fees to sell back | Augusta vs Goldco |
| American Hartford Gold | No liquidation fees; not guaranteed | Augusta vs AHG |
| Advantage Gold | "We'll never turn away a customer" | Augusta vs Advantage Gold |
On paper the terms look similar. What sets Augusta's apart is the 24-hour window, which gives you a set time to check its bid against another dealer before the sale is final. Whatever company you use, the bid on the day you sell matters more than the wording of the promise.

Augusta buyback and withdrawals: frequently asked questions
Does Augusta Precious Metals buy back gold?
Yes. Augusta says it has never declined a buyback and charges no separate liquidation fee when it repurchases your metals. It also says the law does not let any dealer guarantee future repurchases, and that its buyback policy can change without notice.
How long does it take to get paid when I sell back to Augusta?
Augusta says funds are typically wired within about three weeks, depending on how fast Equity Trust and the depository process the sale. In an IRA, the money goes to your IRA at Equity Trust, not to you directly.
What price does Augusta pay when I sell back?
Augusta bases its offer on the specific coins or bars you own, not simply ounces times the spot price, so the bid can be above, near or below melt value. The price is confirmed on a recorded call, which opens a 24-hour window in which you can cancel if another dealer offers more.
Do I have to sell my metals back to Augusta?
No. Augusta says you are not required to sell back to it, and you can sell only part of your position.
How do RMDs work with an Augusta gold IRA?
For a traditional gold IRA, RMDs generally start at age 73. You can sell part of the metals for cash or take coins out in kind through your custodian. The IRS also lets you take the total RMD for all your IRAs from one or more of them, so you can take it from a different IRA and keep the metal. Roth IRA owners have no RMDs during their lifetime.
Can I take my Augusta IRA coins home?
Not while they are in the IRA; IRA metals must be held at an approved depository, and home storage can put the account's tax status at risk. You can take a distribution in kind and have the coins shipped to you through your custodian, but that is a distribution, so check the tax effect first.
Ask about the exit before you buy
Before you approve any order, ask for today's price and today's buyback bid on the same coins. If you are moving $50,000 or more, Augusta's free kit is a good place to start; it sets out the fees and process before any sales call.
